A micrometer is a precision measuring instrument that uses a calibrated screw to measure small distances, these measurements are translated into large rotations of the screw which can then be read from a scale or knob.
An external micrometer is also known as a caliper micrometer, and is used to measure the length, width, or outer diameter of an object.
